Paddington

Lily (aged 7): "That was funny. That was chaos. As in, Paddington got up to chaos. It made people really happy because it was cheerful. I'd say it was level with Frozen."

Daddy: I have to say, it was rather charming and I laughed out loud two or three times. Also, lots of surprising filmic references including a fair few cribs from Wes Anderson...?

Lily (aged 7): "I liked it. My favourite bit was when Private had a pink bit on his bottom."

Daddy: The casting of Werner Herzog as the documentary maker at the start of the movie will stand as one of the truly great moments in cinema. Inspired.

Nativity 3: Dude, Where's My Donkey?!

Lily (aged 7): "I really liked it though it was quite sad because we didn't know what was going to happen in the end. My favourite part was when I saw someone from Doctor Who."
Daddy: I had very low expectations for this film. Which it failed to meet. At one point, Lily asked, "why are you covering your face Daddy? That point being Martin Clunes singing and dancing.

Boxtrolls

Lily (aged 7): "I like the Boxtrolls. My favourite was Fish. I didn't think it was scary at all, but there was one bit that made me jump."

Daddy: Charming and inventive, definitely worth seeing - though not sure how many times I'd want to watch it again. Lovely time lapse sequence revealing the stop motion technique in the end credits.

How To Train Your Dragon 2

Lily (aged 7): "I do like all the, whadya call them, dragons, they were really nice and I did like the battle. I loved it bits to bits."

Daddy: I actually found it rather misjudged. A bit slow, too long and rather too dark for its target audience in places. I can't see it meriting as many repeat viewings as the first one."

Lily (aged 6: "I absolutely love it, I could faint. I liked it when Rio brushed his teeth."

Lily (aged 6): "If I had to do two best, best films, a boy one and a girl one, the girl one would be Frozen and the boy one would be Mr Peabody."

Nana: I think it was a kiddies' film, really.

Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy

Lily (aged 6): "I loved it. I love that they made something out of a movie that already happened. I like the little tiny croc, he's so sweet."

Daddy: I think Lily is referring to the fact that it's a prequel that sets up the backstory of the pirates from Peter Pan. There was some effort to bring A N Other Tinker Bell  movie in line with the better Disney offerings (the involvement of John Lasseter and casting of Tom Hidddleston). But it's only a nudge above the usual.

The Lego Movie

Lily (aged 6): "I did like the fact there was lots of Lego and it was all made of Lego and Star Wars kicked in. The little boy at the end, I think he was the main character.  It's not as good as Frozen but it's funnier than Frozen."

Daddy: The Matrix, done with Lego. Whilst I laughed several times, it's more a movie that wants you to appreciate the cleverness. In fact, I'd say it's actually got less to offer for kids than it has for the Family Guy audience who can feel smug when they get the references.
